ECG (Electrocardiogram)

ECG (Electrocardiogram)

An ECG (Electrocardiogram) is a quick, simple, and completely painless diagnostic test used to measure and record the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. It is one of the most commonly used tests in cardiology to evaluate heart health and detect abnormalities at an early stage.

During the test, small sticky electrodes are placed on specific areas of the body such as the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to an ECG machine, which records the electrical signals produced every time the heart beats. The results are displayed as wave patterns on a graph or printed paper, which the doctor carefully analyzes.

An ECG helps in identifying various heart conditions such as irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), previous or ongoing heart attacks, poor blood flow to the heart muscles, and structural abnormalities. It can also detect issues like thickened heart muscles or electrolyte imbalances that may affect heart function.

The test usually takes only a few minutes and does not cause any pain or side effects. The patient is required to lie still and relax while the recording is taken, as movement can affect accuracy.

Overall, ECG plays a very important role in early diagnosis, emergency evaluation, and continuous monitoring of heart conditions, making it a basic but essential tool in cardiac care.
